The Benguela Current shapes Port Nolloth's character, keeping temperatures mild year-round and pulling coastal fog in off the ocean on many mornings. That absence of orientation toward outside visitors is part of what makes it worth stopping for: the atmosphere is functional and the harbor activity is genuine rather than staged.

The beaches are cold and rocky, not suited to swimming, but seals are common along the shoreline and the birdlife around the harbor includes species that do not appear in the Okiep interior.

The road is sealed for most of the route. An overnight stop in Port Nolloth makes it possible to reach the harbor at first light before returning inland.
