Location & Surroundings

Windhoek, meaning "windy corner" in Afrikaans, is the capital of Namibia, situated at the geographical centre of the country. Originally inhabited by the San (Bushmen), the area saw the settlement of the Orlam, descendants of Dutch settlers, around 1850 due to its hot springs.

The town developed with the construction of a large stone church by the Boers, but conflicts between the Nama and Herero peoples led to its destruction by 1873. In 1884, it became a German Protectorate, and in 1890, Windhoek was officially founded when Captain Curt von Francois designated it as the administrative centre. After World War I, Windhoek came under South African control, during which infrastructure improved but racial segregation policies continued. Following Namibia's independence in 1990, the city experienced a cultural and political revival.

Today, Windhoek retains its colonial charm with German influences evident in its cuisine and architecture, serving as the economic hub of Namibia and attracting an annual population growth of approximately 12,000 residents. Key attractions include the Christuskirche, Tintenpalast, and several museums, making Windhoek a vital centre for tourism and commerce in the region.
