The name "Welkom" translates to "welcome" in Afrikaans and Dutch—fitting for a city that sprang to life following the discovery of gold. With the influential Ernest Oppenheimer of Anglo American playing a key role in its early development, Welkom stands out as one of the rare cities in the world to be entirely pre-planned.
