The Hidden Gem of the Northern Cape, nestled in the heart of South Africas Northern Cape province, Kathu is a charming town known as the iron ore capital of the region and affectionately nicknamed The Town Under the Trees. This name reflects the town's unique setting in one of the worlds only two natural Camel Thorn tree forests. These majestic Acacia erioloba trees create a serene and shaded landscape unlike anywhere else.

The Kathu Camel Thorn Forest spans around 4,000 hectares and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the remarkable Sociable Weaver birds, which build their enormous nests in the trees. The forest was declared a State Forest in the early 20th century and became a registered Natural Heritage Site in 1995. Some trees here are believed to be over 300 years old. The biodiversity includes numerous endemic and protected species, making Kathu a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers.

Kathu is centrally locatedabout two hours from both Upington and Vryburg, with Kimberley just three hours away and Kuruman a short 20-minute drive. Its location makes it a convenient stop on a Northern Cape road trip.
