About

This majestic 1865 building in the very centre of town has a long history and many past lives - from a general dealer's trading store, to a tobacco factory, to a newspaper office, to a boarding house, to a photographer's studio, to a gallery and restaurant. The artist-couple who've renovated this building have tried to honour each part of this history.

From the indigenous garden in the front to the local artwork on the walls, we love sharing what makes Prince Albert special. Situated directly across from the museum and the visitor's hub, right next door to the gallery, and within walking distance to both restaurants and walking trails, you'll find this spot as central as you can get. Hendry's coffee shop on the stoep downstairs is open most days and serves coffee and delicious artisan patisserie.

Balcony or patio rooms enjoy sweeping views of the Swartberg mountains, and spectacular sunrises and moonrises. Garden rooms open onto the cool back garden, each with its own secluded stoep. In summer, the rooms are cooled by a fan or evaporative cooler, and in winter, rooms have heaters and electric blankets. All rooms are fitted with high-quality natural fibre bed linen.

Location & Surroundings

Prince Albert is a quaint, historic town located on the southern edge of the Great Karoo semi-desert region in South Africa's Western Cape, nestled at the foot of the magnificent Swartberg Mountains. The town is an oasis thanks to water flowing from the mountains, which supports local agriculture, primarily olives, figs, fruit, and karoo lamb. Its main economic drivers are agriculture and tourism. It is famous for its well-preserved Cape Dutch, Karoo, and Victorian architecture, its clear skies for stargazing, and its proximity to the iconic, untarred Swartberg Pass.
