Location & Surroundings

Outjo is a quiet settlement in the Kunene Region of northern Namibia, famously known as the gateway to Etosha National Park. Its name translates from Otjiherero as "small hills," referring to the dolomite landscape surrounding the town. While it serves as a critical junction for travellers heading toward the northern wildlife plains or the rugged terrain of Damaraland, the town remains a central hub for local cattle ranching and commercial agriculture.

The town's history is rooted in the German colonial era, established in 1897 as a military outpost. This heritage is preserved in the local architecture, most notably at the Franke Haus Museum and the stone Windmill Tower, which was built in 1900 to supply the original fort with water. These landmarks offer a glimpse into the town's origins as a frontier station in a semi-arid environment.

Today, it functions as an essential service centre, providing supermarkets, fuel stations, and bakeries for both locals and tourists. The economy is supported by livestock farming and charcoal production, while the hospitality sector accommodates those in transit. Beyond the town limits, the area features impressive natural attractions such as the Ugab Terraces and the Vingerklip rock monolith.
