Location & Surroundings

The quaint village of De Kelders, located just 5 km north of Gansbaai and about a 25-minute drive from Hermanus, has managed to avoid the large-scale tourism that often characterises this region, maintaining its charm as a traditional fishing village known for its exceptional seafood.

De Kelders is set along the shores of Walker Bay, famous as the breeding ground of the Southern Right Whale. Each year, from July to November, these magnificent whales return to the bay’s sheltered inlets and rocky coves to mate and calve. The area is renowned for offering some of the best land-based whale watching in the world, with the whales often coming within meters of the coastline, thrilling onlookers.

The coastline here also boasts a unique geological feature: a series of underground caves beneath the cliffs. Originally known as Die Drup Kelder (the drip cellar), the town's name today simply refers to De Kelders, meaning "the cellars" in Dutch. These natural caves, both large and small, are home to stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal-clear pools of cool water, ideal for swimming. One cave, the Freshwater Cave, is particularly famous for its pool, but it is not open to the public in order to preserve its pristine condition. For swimming, Stanford's Bay in De Kelders offers an excellent alternative.

Further up the coast, just outside the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, you'll find the Klipgat Cave, which contains some of the oldest remains of modern humans.
