Location & Surroundings

Known as the "Oasis of the Kalahari," Kuruman is a thriving town in the Northern Cape of South Africa, situated on the Ghaap Plateau at an altitude of 1,131m. It is most famous for the Eye of Kuruman (Die Oog), the largest natural spring in the Southern Hemisphere, which gushes approximately 20 to 30 million litres of crystal-clear water daily and sustains the town's lush, green environment amidst the surrounding semi-arid landscape.

Historically significant as the site where missionary Robert Moffat established a mission in the 1820s and translated the Bible into Setswana, the area now serves as a critical economic hub driven by massive mining operations (manganese, iron ore, and blue asbestos) and extensive livestock and game farming.

With a climate characterised by hot summers and frost-prone winters, Kuruman remains a vital stop on the main route between Gauteng and Namibia, offering unique tourist attractions ranging from the archaeological wonders of Wonderwerk Cave to world-class hunting and bird sanctuaries.
