Location & Surroundings

Umtata (now often spelt Mthatha) is the vibrant heart of Madiba Country – a region deeply connected to the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, one of the world’s most beloved leaders. Born in the nearby village of Mvezo and raised in Qunu, Mandela’s remarkable journey is honoured today through the Nelson Mandela Museum, whose main hub is located right here in Umtata.

Nestled along the banks of the Mtata River—named after the indigenous Sneezewood (umtati) trees known for their strength and healing properties—Umtata boasts a rich cultural heritage. Founded in 1879, the town was once the capital of the Transkei, a former Xhosa homeland during the Apartheid era. Today, it remains the cultural and economic centre of this scenic region in the Eastern Cape.

Visitors to Umtata are immersed in a living tradition. Women still wear traditional ochre-coloured dresses, adorned with turbans, wire bangles, and white clay patterns. Boys undergo the time-honoured rite of passage known as Khwetha, and scenes of daily rural life, such as women balancing water jars on their heads and livestock meandering by the roadside, offer a glimpse into the enduring customs of the area.

Umtata is a key stop on the Nelson Mandela Route, a journey that begins in King William’s Town, where you can pay respects at the grave of Steve Biko, another icon of South African liberation. The route continues through Bisho and along the N2 to Umtata, culminating at the Nelson Mandela Museum. Opened exactly ten years after his release from prison, the museum is spread across three significant locations: Umtata, Qunu, and Mvezo.

History buffs will also appreciate Umtata’s preserved colonial architecture, including the neoclassical Town Hall completed in 1908. Don’t miss a visit to the Bunga, a striking domed building that once housed the Transkei Parliament. Today, it forms part of the museum complex and features a fascinating collection of international gifts presented to Mandela during his presidency.

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Madiba Hiking Trail, which winds through the natural beauty of the region while tracing important steps in Mandela’s life.

Whether you're drawn by history, culture, or the warm spirit of the people, Umtata offers an unforgettable window into South Africa’s past and present.
