Location & Surroundings

Mokopane, formerly known as Potgietersrus, was renamed in 2003 to honor King Mghombane Gheghana, a local Ma Nrebele leader. Though the name Mokopane is derived from the Northern Sotho version of the king's name, it is linguistically inaccurate despite Northern Sotho being the dominant language in the area. Nearby traditional kingdoms include Kekana (Moshate), Langa (Mapela), Lebelo (Garasvlei), and Langa (Bakenburg).

Located about two hours northeast of Pretoria. Mokopane serves as both a getaway and a stopover for travellers heading to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Kruger National Park. The area features typical bushveld vegetation, including Vachellia, Senegalia, and aloes that bloom in winter. The nearby Zebediela Citrus Estate is one of the largest citrus farms in the southern hemisphere.
