Historically, the town of Carolina was established in 1882 as a stopover for wagon trains travelling between Johannesburg and the bustling gold fields of the Kaap Valley. It was founded by farmer C.J. Coetzee, who offered portions of his farm to fellow farmers on the condition that the town be named after his wife. Despite being destroyed during the Second Anglo-Boer War, Carolina was rebuilt, and today, visitors can still admire the remarkable examples of sandstone architecture in its public buildings.

One of the area's highlights is the breathtaking Komati Gorge and the winding Komati River, offering an idyllic setting for a range of outdoor activities.
