Directions to Protea Ridge

About 40 km from Lusikisiki via the R61, then a one-way gravel road (one way in, one way out). Landmark: Protea Ridge cellphone mast. By car from Durban: ~5 hours; tar almost all the way; final ~40 km from Lusikisiki is dirt road (~30–40 km/h, just over an hour); doable in a small hire car when dry. From Port Edward/KZN south: R61 via Flagstaff to Lusikisiki; then concrete road toward Mboytji/Magwa Tea Estate, continue straight onto dust road, right fork after 500 m, over three streams to the stone-pillar turnoff. From Port Saint Johns: across the Umzimvubu, R61 to Lusikisiki; Engen on left, concrete road right — then 40 km to the lodge. From Johannesburg: N3 → Howick → R617 via Bulwer/Underberg to Kokstad → N2 over Brookes Nek → Flagstaff road → R61 at Magusheni. Avoid night driving on the dirt section if unfamiliar; livestock and pedestrians common. Wet season: dirt road can become almost impassable. Mthatha Airport ~3 hrs; King Shaka International ~5 hrs (shuttle by prior arrangement). Helicopter from Margate Airport (~25 min); Mkweni grass airstrip ~5 km; Mount Thesiger strip ~90 km south.
