Riparian species congregate along the riverbanks, and the transitional bushveld habitat supports raptors, bee-eaters, kingfishers, and sunbirds. No specialist guiding is necessary, though a regional bird checklist from a local lodge helps orient first-time visitors.
Golf is available at several courses within a short drive. Pretoria's golf infrastructure is well-developed, and the eastern fringe benefits from that. The combination of a game drive and a round of golf in the same two-night stay is a format that several properties actively cater for.
About 25 kilometres to the southeast, the Cullinan Diamond Mine offers a distinct day-trip option. Surface and underground tours run on a scheduled basis, and the mine remains operational. The town itself retains much of its original early 20th-century streetscape, making for an interesting few hours beyond the mine gates.
Best Time to Visit Shere
The climate here follows the highveld pattern common across Gauteng: hot, wet summers and dry, mild winters with cold nights. Most visitors choose to travel between May and August, when the dry season significantly reduces vegetation cover across the surrounding bushveld. Grasses die back, water sources become focal points for wildlife, and animal sightings become considerably easier. Temperatures during the day are pleasant, but nights can drop sharply, sometimes below 5 degrees Celsius, so warmer clothing is worth packing regardless of how mild the daytime forecast appears.
Spring, from September into early October, is a transitional period worth considering. The bush begins to regenerate before the first rains, temperatures climb steadily, and migratory bird species begin to arrive, adding value for anyone spending time along the river corridors and reserve edges.
Summer runs from October through April and brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms. These are typically short and intense rather than prolonged, so mornings are often clear and suitable for outdoor activity. Total driving time from OR Tambo to Shere is typically between 60 and 80 minutes depending on traffic.
The N4, which connects Pretoria to Mpumalanga, is also accessible within a reasonable drive and is relevant for visitors combining a stay in Shere with travel further east toward the Lowveld.
Public transport does not serve Shere in any practical sense. A hire car is effectively essential, both for reaching a property and for getting around once there. Car hire counters operate at OR Tambo and in central Pretoria. Shere and Surrounding Areas
Shere's position on the eastern edge of the Tshwane metropolitan area places a cluster of communities within a short drive, each with a different function for visitors using the area as a base.
Greenview, 9 kilometres away, is a residential suburb that provides the closest access to everyday retail, fuel stops, and convenience shopping. Shere itself has little in the way of commercial infrastructure, making Greenview the typical first stop for visitors needing supplies.
Denneboom, 10 kilometres out, sits along the eastern growth corridor between Pretoria and the agricultural fringe. It has developed into a mixed residential and light commercial zone, offering services to local communities that are unavailable closer to Shere.
Waltloo, also at 10 kilometres, is primarily an industrial and logistics hub on the Pretoria eastern edge. It has little to offer visitors directly but functions as a key road junction and navigation landmark for those approaching Shere from the city or from the south.
Elarduspark, 11 kilometres to the south, is an established residential suburb with a broader range of amenities, including restaurants, medical facilities, and larger retail stores. Day visitors based in Shere who need access to urban services often find Elarduspark the most practical option.
Eersterus, 12 kilometres from Shere, is a township with a distinct community character. Informal markets and local traders give it a different feel from the suburban areas nearby, and for visitors interested in the everyday social fabric of the eastern Pretoria region, it provides a grounded perspective not found elsewhere along this stretch.
Roodeplaat, 13 kilometres out, offers the strongest draw for outdoor visitors. The Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve provides water-based activities including boating and fishing, as well as walking trails through surrounding bush. Birdwatching is especially rewarding here, and the reserve serves as a lighter, more accessible day option compared to a full game drive further north.
Planning Your Stay
Properties in the Shere area are predominantly small-scale operations with limited room counts, and availability disappears quickly. On winter weekends, when dry-season conditions draw visitors from Pretoria and Johannesburg, booking three to four weeks ahead is a reasonable minimum. June and July in particular fill fast.
